About how much compost should be amended to vegetable garden soil?

544- square feet of dense soil. Not sure of nutrient level of soil.

Compost or compost manure? Potting soil?

Which would be more economical?

The most economical thing is composted manure that you compost yourself. I have built a 2 bin system. The bins are 4'x5'x4'. One bin can hold 1000# of horse manure in shavings.
I don't recommend using the bags of cow manure from Walmart or stores like that. I bought a pallet of manure from Walmart last year and my soil doesn't look any different. It is still heavy clay. Another thing to mix in is gypsum. Gypsum will help break up heavy soil without changing the pH level like peat moss can.

What happens if you use unfinished compost in your garden?

I started a compost pile about 3 or 4 weeks ago. But, I want to start planting vegetables in May. Could I (or should I) use some of the unfinished compost mixed in with soil when planting the vegetable seeds? Or should the unfinished compost be placed on the top of the soil?

Or should the unfinished compost not be added at all?

Unfinished compost can carry a lot of ¨germs¨. The bad bacterias and fungi that help compost to break-down are are not good for weak seedlings that need the most tolerable environment possible. Especially if there were any signs of mildew in the composting matter at all. The leftover seeds/weeds would end up being the least of your problems seeing as starting completely over will be the following step for amending unfinished compost to the soil. Try using the soil already there adding nutrients to it this growing season and add some food to the thriving bacteria pile. Or, if the soil is really bad, top soil from a local garden center mulch yard should help it out.

How much compost and soil for a 4×8x1 raised vegetable garden bed?

I have an 8-foot long by 4-foot wide by 1 foot deep raised garden bed for vegetables. What should I fill it with and how much? I assume I need compost and soil. Wondering how much of each, or what else I need to use?

You will need about two tons of top soil to fill your raised bed and rake a bag of compost into the top 3 to 4 ins and plant –best of luck –yours
