Do all Staffies hate water?

Or rather, do they hate being out in the rain? They have the image of being tough dogs (which people imposed on them, they didn't make it up for themselves) and yet I don't know one that doesn't hate being rained on. My little Staffie loves jumping in the river (while attached to a 26foot extending lead I might add) and splashing about in deep puddles, but if we get caught in a heavy shower she hates it and always heads for the nearest tree to stand under, which is something she's learned from me! So, does anyone have a Staffordshire Terrier that doesn't mind the rain? Oh, and just for advice, the best way to dry a wet dog is by using kitchen paper, not a towel. It's more absorbent, and you can put it into a compost bin too.
She does have a waterproof coat, and the most common comment from people who see her when she's wearing it is that she looks "lush", whatever that means. She also has a fleece hoody with Cuddle Junkie sewn onto it for really cold weather and she does look so cute, although that's not why she wears it, she really does feel the cold, but then she does have very short fur. I don't like it when people dress their pets just to make a fashion statement or something daft like that, but a coat for protection against the elements is ok.

Not all dogs like being in the rain as they do tend to put there ears down or hide under trees ! But the more your staffy stays in the rain the more he/she'll get used to it. my dog never likes the rain so i tend to stay out of it when shes with me. (Shes a scottie)

Good luck x

hello. we have a staffie called molly. she is six months old. she loves the rain and will jump in a river/pond. tho the last time she did the water was nearly five foot deep and she nearly drown. she is a little weary of it now! i know its not very hip or cool for a tough looking staffie but you could try getting a little coat for when its raining? molly doesnt mind when you put a coat on when its wet.

I have a pit bull and although she doesn't really like it hitting her ears out of nowhere in that sensitive spot, she will get into her zoomie fits and tear @$$ around the yard when I have to take her out in the rain. It doesn't really phase her at all!

    Hiya Fiona,
LOL LOL LOL LOL … I can just see the image of your dog running from tree to tree trying to get home out of the rain, lol lol lol lol, what a sight… Well Fiona i think you can take the blame for this behaviour, i bet when it rains when your out you hunch up your shoulders, head down, and you quicken your walking pace, well hunni, dogs are VERY good at reading body language, i bet if you ran out side when raining, with her fav toy laughing and jumping about, she would be right there with you, jumping after her toy…. Believe me Fiona if you learn to love the rain your dog will love it also, try jumping in puddles when walking past them, and watch your dogs response, its magic, i have 3 dogs, and when we are out in the rain its a race to who gets to the puddles 1st… lol lol lol make it fun no matter what the weather….. :-)

    Nope.

We have some here in our village on Lake Michigan who ADORE swimming in the lake. Do great retrieve work in the lake as well. Just fools for doing fetch in the lake.

The difference between acting like water baby and swimming; and getting rained on, is the direction of the water. Swimming and playing in it, they can keep their heads up and 'choose' whether to get their faces wet. In the rain, it is hitting their heads, their eyes and, with an up right or part up right ear, going down in their ear.

    It's funny you asked :)

    Mine loves the water!
When I take him to the beach he heads straight for the water. I cannot even get in the pool without him!!
BUT… When it rains he puts his tail between his legs. He doesn't even like walking on the wet grass. Ironic isn't it?
Also, I do believe we teach our pets our own habits. Staffies are all too smart and they are pleasers!
Thanks for the advice on the kitchen paper :)
