how do i get my compost pile to “cook”?

i keep putting in dry leaves along with my grass clippings and kitchen scraps, but i don’t think that it’s getting as hot as it should get in the bin. i saw a video where a man’s compost pile was actually steaming. how to achieve this?

Keep the compost slightly damp and add a few shovels full of dirt to introduce the microorganisms that break-down the raw materials. Turning the compost with a pitchfork or mixing it up with a shovel or rake every week or so will speed the process along.
If you live in a cold Winter area, the decomposition slows down or completely stops when temperatures get to freezing. you can keep the pile warm in cold weather by covering it with a plastic tarp. I use black plastic, the thickness of a trash bag to keep my compost warm…
