Food attracts the rodents, and rodents attract the snakes. You knew this before you asked the question, so the real question is "If I continue to put food in my compost pile, how can I keep rodents out of it, therefore keeping the snakes from even wanting to get in?". The answer is just as simple though. Enclose the entire pile (top,bottom&sides) into a very tight box with holes big enough to allow bugs and worms access in and out as well as air to aid in the decomposition process but small enough to keep even the smallest mouse out. This will eliminate any odors that could attract rodents or other hungry animals. If you are really worried though, you can go buy a trash can just for organic waste. Rodents aren't generally attracted either, unless you're adding pasta or grains to your compost pile - items you're advised not to add. Everything on earth that was once alive composts eventually, so your compost pile will be no more likely to attract snakes and rodents than the world at large.
