We do the same in Perth (W.Australia)....I have an under-ground system which attracts tree roots away from the house, & cuts out 'midges' which linger around regular worm composting systems. Works similar to the old fashioned leach drains, but is lined with 'bedding materials' for the worms. Food is fed from the surface through 6" dia thick plastic pipes, and sealed with a saucer of water for the birds.Good luck with teaching the kids in Havasu !.
